I realized today that the MTN is really dangerous. Not because it'll blow you up or leave a piece of you behind (we've totally tested, it's safe. Mostly safe. Pretty safe?), but becuase geography starts becoming completely meaningless. I went through the contacts on my phone today and realized I literally don't know anyone in Boston anymore. The city I live in. If that's not a sign I don't know what is.

I think it's time to move.

Now the question is, New York? London? Or Gotham? I mean, the rents are good in Gotham but I hear there's a hell of a crime problem...

Fun Friday night fact: I never realized before that you could hack those little scoring computers at the bowling alley. I'm going to blame this on sharing brainspace with a teenager. It definitely wasn't me who changed every score in the place to 69. I'm not taking the blame for that one. Well, okay, maybe.

I can't believe it's already July 8th. I start my new job on the 12th. When I had to wait for interviews and background checks and everything to be completed that seemed really far away. Now it's only a few days. Monday. I can honestly say that I am now officially totally psyched for this. Maybe I'll write a script to count down the hours.

I think I've misplaced my ambition. Doing nothing is way too easy, especially when you've got new cities to explore.

I need a to do list.

Item 1: Write to do list...

Jun. 5th, 2010

It's official, I've graduated. I'm done with this academic thing. For now. To commemorate this achievement, we have partied as only geeks and engineers can party. Next I'm helping some friends move into amazing new digs. Not a bad weekend.

I'm also finishing the oddest C.V. I've ever put together. I'm still not sure how I'm supposed to list experience and knowledge that comes from my headmate. Anyone have any advice? They didn't cover this in the post-grad career seminars.

Commencement

About 28 hours ago, a very nice academic recommended that I be given a degree of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, subject to some minor typographical thesis edits. Sucker!

It was hard work and included both the normal amount of psychological scarring and (given the subject area) a minimal amount of actual physical scarring, but it was totally worth it. I am now as educated as I am ever likely to be unless I lose my mind and decide I want a PhD so that I can actually get respect from undergrads and get into confusing and hilarious scrapes in public emergency first aid situations.

Mark your calendars for June 4th, should you be interested seeing a guy in a robe and a hood award me said degree, or if you're just interested in the very serious academic partying that is sure to go on after.

My thesis is due on Friday. This Friday. April 30th Friday. Just slightly more than twenty-four hours from now Friday. It's fine. Really. I've been working up to this my entire academic career. I've been preparing for this specific paper for months. More than months. Years. I couldn't be more ready to turn in a work that is as good as I can possibly make it.

I think I'm going to be sick.

Who: Josh Blake
What: Good Friday Mass. Yes, the scientist has religion.
When: Friday Morning
Where: St. Mary's of the Annunciation
Backdated... a few hours. Because I got home late, but inspiration can't be denied. :D

It was weirdly appropriate that Josh had managed to show up for the most solemn service of the year. )

Scout's Honor

As of today, I'm deserving of yet another one of these badges. I'm telling you, if I make it to graduation without destroying either the lab or myself in some sort of freakish unlucky catastrophe it will not be for lack of trying.
